Zog’s Rap Song

The Inimitable Jedd Tyler has written and recorded a Zog’s rap, free to download…for now.  If you ever need to work with a music producer or have some beats written for you, do not hesitate to contact him.  He is reasonably priced and immensely talented, and specializes in Hip Hop beats and Movie/TV scores.  Jedd is first and foremost a composer, but you can catch him at his secondary gig: Service Industry Night every Monday at Zog’s, or catch him at the door on Thursdays and Saturdays and high-five him on his work of art!

Very Old South meets Uppermost South

I don’t mind when people call North Carolina “The South,” because something in the line of states moving upwards has to be the last “South,” but it makes me snicker since there’s even a “North” in “North Carolina.”

However.  I got to thinking.  If I’m gonna claim the South as a New Orleans native and giggle at other states on the basis of my own semantic idiosyncrasies, maybe I should look inward and realize there’s a “New” in “New Orleans,” the word “new” in a place where nothing is new, everything is old, and nothing isn’t based in spooky and/or debaucherous tradition. Am I a hypocrite for thinking any state with a “North” in its name shouldn’t be considered Southern?

Now that we’ve settled that, I’d like to formally introduce you to a very old party in a somewhat Southern state…Zog’s Third Annual Mardi Gras Bash with Stuart McNair.

Mardi Gras things at Zog's

Mardi Gras things at Zog’s

Jedd and Mandey from the last party!

Jedd and Mandey from the last party!

This will be on special.

This will be on special.

Come make your very own Masquerade Mask, enjoy free billiards and snacks, cheap Abita Beers and Hurricanes, and once again dance to the Zydeco stylings of our one-man extravaganza, Stuart McNair.

It’s coming up soon, Feb. 8 at 7pm, so clear your calendars and come by.  Zog’s will be packed, so get there early.  Mask-making starts at 7, music at 9.  Wear a costume.  We won’t recognize you if you don’t.

If you’re busy that night, come by even sooner for local darlings Johnny Staxx and the Durty Boyz on Friday, February 1st, and the funky four-piece Honeychile on March 16.

And don’t forget.  Pool is free every Sunday and half-free from 5-9pm every other day. Since we believe in week-long birthdays, you and your friends get free pool for the whole week surrounding yours.

Lastly, Zog’s is now home to the World-Famous, First-Ever, Bathing Sarcophagus.  Come see it in action.  Our free-hour-of-pool this time around goes to the first one who mentions said sarcophagus to us.

Hotter than a match head…

So, summer’s here, but the nights have stayed really nice and 75-degrees-ish so far.  I’ll take it! As you know, everything sort of grinds to a halt in the Chapel Hill summer season, but at Zog’s we just don’t recognize the concept of boredom.

Before we get into all this, let me just remind you that not only is Zog’s DOG FRIENDLY, but we also have dog treats and we will take your dog’s picture and put it on the Zog Dog Blog.

First off, we’ve refelted and releveled all three of our tables and made them Mardi-Gras friendly!

No more blaming the tables for mediocre performance! They’re perfect!

We’ve debuted out summer drink list, and just like last year it’s chock full of drinks made with herbs we’re growing right here at Zog’s, in the window by the yellow pool table!  We have mint, basil, and pineapple sage growing, and we go to the Carrboro Farmer’s Market twice weekly to stock up on cucumbers and dill.  We make the simple syrup from sugar, black tea, and mint flowers.  Here’s a copy of our drink list, with some pics of the actual drinks!

Meet the Dill’n’Thomas, with Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray Soda and our house-infused dill vodka!

A classic Pimm’s Cup! This one has Farmer’s Market cucumbers and comes in a fancy vintage glass!

This is the dirtiest martini you’ve ever had sans olive juice! Half a lemon muddled with a bunch of dill and basil, then shaken with Ransom Gin and Pimm’s and garnished with dill and cucumber.

We’ll keep posting pics as we take them.  Moving on!

Beer tasting are every other Tuesday and are led by Evan from the Carrboro Beverage Company.  They are SELF-GUIDED, which means no one will be telling you to stick your face in a cup and sniff your drink, so if you like that sort of direction, be aware.  Evan is the most knowledgeable beer lover we’ve ever met, and he can answer any question you throw at him.  The beer tastings cost $5 and you get to try six different fancy beers. The June dates are the 12th and 26th.  Stop by the bar or email Mandey at zogs.pool.ch at gmail dot com to reserve a spot.  Spots must be reserved in advance so we know how much beer to get!

We have a couple of shows this month, also. Carrboro weirdos  Nanner Head will be gracing us on the 16th.  You can check out their videos here.  The show is free and pool is ALWAYS free while a band is playing.  If you want to be a part of this event on facebook, click here.

The last Saturday of every month brings Chris Ross and the Something Stupids, our house band.  They play Misfits and Ramones covers, with a few originals thrown in.  They also welcome impromptu guest singers, which means if you’ve been itching to perform “Die, Die, My Darlin'” in front of a moshing crowd, it might be your time to shine.  For facebook invite, click here.

They’re so important, they’re written on the girls’ shower door at the bar. Yes, the bar has a shower in it.

Come visit us.  We have darts, board games, pool, and even a craft box you can haul out.  It’s exactly what it sounds like…a box full of random art bits. Create!  It’s a great way to start/avoid conversation!

P.S.: First one to come up and yell out the name of song we used in the title gets a free hour of pool.

February Fun at the Zoggy

February’s insane, my friends.  Here goes:

Tuesday the 7th:  BEER TASTING with Evan, 8-9pm

Come join us at Zog’s for our bi-monthly Beer Tasting with Evan from Carrboro Beverage Company!  He’s the most knowledgeable beer guy we know, and he picks out six crazy beers for each tasting.  Pay your 5 bucks and you get 4-oz samples of each beer.  That’s 24 oz of fancy beer for five bones!  Sign up in advance, though, because we cap it at 25 and they usually fill up fast!

Saturday the 11th:  SOUL DEEP with DJ Creighton, 9pm-2am

DJ Creighton gives you hours of bona-fide soul vinyl.  No cover, just dancing.

Tuesday the 14th:  VALENTINE’S DAY THROWBACK PROM! 8pm-2am

That’s right, we’re throwing a prom for all you adults who can’t get enough shitty 90s music, taffeta dresses, and leaving room for the Holy Ghost.  Prizes will be given for best get-ups, and we will be voting for a Prom King and Queen!!

Friday the 17th:  Zog’s MARDI GRAS BASH 5pm-2am

Come celebrate the best holiday ever with NOLA transplants! Live Zydeco music from Stuart McNair!  Jackson Square-style caricature artist Richard Cloudt will be here to draw your portrait!  Make-Your-Own Mardi Gras Mask!  Hurricanes, Abita, and Dixie on special!  Bring a Cajun-inspired dish if you’re so inclined!  DRESS UP IN COSTUME! IT’S MARDI GRAS!!

Tuesday the 21st: BEER TASTING with Evan, 8-9pm (see above for info)

Saturday the 25th: JOHNNY STAXX AND THE DURTY BOYS and Sydney’s 21st Birfday!!

And don’t forget, Pool is FREE every single Sunday open to close.

And wait, before you go. . .It’s time to vote in the INDY WEEKLY BEST OF THE TRIANGLE 2012! Click that link to vote for your favorite places in the Triangle.  Best restaurant, best hair salon, best place to buy gifts (and, of course, best Pool Hall, Jukebox, Bartender, Neighborhood Bar, Place to Bring a Blind Date, and Place to Chill, ahem, ahem).

Love you guys,

Mandey.

January for you. All for you.

Our spooky hallway.

You’ve heard of Christmas in July, but what about July in Christmas? For those of you hardcore types who need something cold in these desolate wintertimes, we’re doing a weekly summer drink special. Last week? Pimm’s Cup. This week? Frozen Moonshine Strawberry Colada. Next week? Who knows? Come show us how tough you are. Order a summer thing and wear your mittens while you drink it.

Beer tastings! January 10th and 24th (both Tuesdays) come up at 8pm with a crisp five dollar bill and hang out with our resident beer expert Evan from Carrboro Beverage Company while he guides you through six fancy beers you’ve probably never heard of. Advance sign up is recommended so we know how much beer to get, but we usually order enough to accommodate walk-ins.

MUSIC, Holmes! Zog’s is hosting it’s first-ever DJ on Saturday, January 21st. DJ Creighton will be here with his turntables spinning some soul and funk for absolutely free. Fun starts around 9pm and we will have some great specials for you.

The Fooligans will be once again hosting our monthly potluck on Saturday the 28th. Come bring a dish, listen to some great live music from those guys and some special guests. Potluck starts at 7pm, music starts around 9, and the night doesn’t end until you leave (or 2am, whichever comes first).

Remember, we have free pool every single Sunday from open to close, and we open every day at 5pm with half priced pool from 5-9pm. We offer $3 hi balls on Mondays, $3 Fancy Drafts on Tuesdays, $2.50 Narragansetts and Ol’Yellas on Wednesdays, and rotating specials every other day.

Do you have questions? Comments? Do you want to book a party for cheap or free? Email Mandey at zogs.pool.ch@gmail.com and she’ll help with whatever you need.

And if you haven’t been to Zog’s in a while, it may be time for you to revisit and see the changes that have happened in the last year. If you have been, and you enjoyed yourself, review us on Yelp! We get inordinately excited about Yelp reviews.

Love,
Mandey! James! Jedd!

P.S.: Lastly, we have this self-explanatory thing goin’ on, too:

Feliz Navizog, Comrades. New Drinks and Events!

Huzzah!

It’s here, folks!  The Zog’s Holiday drink list!  Half hot drinks, half cold drinks, all delicious.  There will be at least two at a time on special every day until it gets too warm to keep doing that.  We’re open at 5 every day so come upstairs and tell us what you think!

Upcoming events:

In addition to FREE POOL from open to close every Sunday, we got:

Wednesday, November 30th:  Rockin’ Ammonia Karaoke!  Here’s the link to the Facebook invite. Rockin’ Ammonia is different from most other Karaoke by focusing more on Classic Rock and alternative and metal songs instead of shit you’ve never heard of sung by people only famous for winning game shows.  The event is free but there’s a suggested donation of a couple of bucks tip for Jon.  $3 PBR Tallboys, also!

Is this exciting to you?

Thursday, December 1st:  We’re teaming up with Chapel Hill’s loveliest bakery, Bread & Butter, for this month’s potluck!  Bring sandwich fixins and B&B will bring the breadstuffs!  It’s gonna be SO FREAKIN’ DELICIOUS my heart’s beatin’ fast already.  Potluck starts at 7 with LIVE MUSIC from Daniel Sean & friends starting around 9pm.  This event is free if you bring sandwich stuff but costs $6 if you come empty-handed and still wanna eat.  If you just want to come hear the music, not eat, and not bring anything, it’s free but you should totally tip the band, yo.

This is the kind of bread you're gonna put yer sammiches on. Straight from Bread & Butter!

As always, you can follow Zog’s:

on Twitter @ZogsChapelHill

on Facebook at /Zogsbar

on Yelp (click here to read recent reviews if you haven’t been to Zog’s lately.  It’s quite different, and you might be due up for another visit!)
